Kansas City Royals catcher Salvador Perez has been named the winner of the 2024 Roberto Clemente Award, recognizing his outstanding philanthropic efforts both on and off the field. The award, presented annually by Major League Baseball, honors players who demonstrate a strong commitment to giving back to their communities.

Perez, a nine-time MLB All-Star, has been a driving force behind several charitable initiatives in his hometown of Valencia, Venezuela, as well as in Kansas City. His foundation, the Salvador Perez Foundation, supports a range of causes, including childhood cancer research, education, and disaster relief.

In accepting the award, Perez paid tribute to the legacy of Roberto Clemente, the Hall of Fame outfielder who was known for his humanitarian work. “I am truly humbled to receive this award,” Perez said. “Roberto Clemente was a hero on and off the field, and I am inspired by his example.”

Perez’s philanthropic efforts have made a significant impact in Kansas City, where he has been involved in numerous fundraising events and charity initiatives. His foundation has also provided support to local food banks, homeless shelters, and other organizations that serve vulnerable populations.

The Roberto Clemente Award is considered one of the most prestigious honors in baseball, and Perez is the first Royals player to receive the award since George Brett in 1986. “Salvador is an outstanding player and an even better person,” said Royals manager Mike Matheny. “He is a shining example of what it means to be a leader on and off the field.”

Perez will be formally presented with the Roberto Clemente Award during a pre-game ceremony at Kauffman Stadium on September 17th. The ceremony will include a video tribute to Perez’s philanthropic work, as well as a presentation by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred.

As Perez looks to the future, he remains committed to using his platform to make a positive impact on the world. “I am grateful for the opportunity to play baseball, but I know that my true purpose is to serve others,” he said. “I will continue to work tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of those around me.”
