Two-time Formula One World Champion Fernando Alonso has sparked outrage after suggesting that safety concerns in the sport are “overblown.”

“In the old days, we didn’t have all these safety features and we were fine,” Alonso said in an interview. “Sometimes I think we’re too focused on safety and not enough on racing.”

Alonso’s comments come after a series of high-profile crashes in recent races, including a near-miss involving teammate Lance Stroll.

Fellow drivers and safety experts have condemned Alonso’s statements.

“Fernando’s comments are reckless and irresponsible,” said seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton. “Safety should always be our top priority.”

The FIA has announced an investigation into Alonso’s remarks.

“Fernando’s words undermine the progress we’ve made in safety,” said FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem. “We’ll address this matter internally.”

Alonso’s team, Aston Martin, has distanced themselves from his comments.

“Fernando’s views do not reflect our team’s values,” said Team Principal Mike Krack. “Safety is paramount.”
