HOUSTON, TEXAS – NOVEMBER 25, 2024

It’s been over five decades since Nolan Ryan threw the fastest pitch in baseball history, a 108.1 mph fastball that still leaves fans and players alike in awe.

In an exclusive interview, Ryan, 77, looked back on that memorable day, August 20, 1974, when he took the mound for the California Angels against the Detroit Tigers.

“I remember it like it was yesterday,” Ryan said, a hint of a smile on his face. “I was feeling strong, and my fastball was popping. I threw a few warm-up pitches, and then I let it loose.”

The pitch, which was clocked at 108.1 mph, was a record-breaker, surpassing the previous mark of 107.6 mph held by Bob Feller.

“I didn’t realize how fast it was until I saw the radar gun,” Ryan recalled. “It was a surreal moment, knowing that I had thrown the fastest pitch in baseball history.”

Ryan’s record-breaking fastball was just one of many highlights in his illustrious 27-year career, which included seven no-hitters, five All-Star appearances, and induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999.

As he looks back on his remarkable career, Ryan is proud of his achievements, but he’s also humble, knowing that his success was the result of hard work, dedication, and a passion for the game.

“I feel fortunate to have had the career I had,” Ryan said. “I was blessed with a strong arm, and I worked hard to develop my skills. But it’s not just about the records or the accolades – it’s about the love of the game, and the joy of competing at the highest level.”
